Textile works that use fabric swatches collected from various sources to create images of 21 bird species from North America considered “at risk,” according to the report Survival by Degrees: 389 Bird Species on the Brink from the National Audubon Society.
The fabrics to create the image of each bird came from different sources: multiple visits to Fashion District in NYC (particularly to Mood Fabrics), surplus materials from Materials for the Arts and Rogers & Goffigon Ltd, and my own stash of swatches collected over the years.
Each swatch of fabric was sewn with nylon thread on colored silk fabrics to evoke the sky or water elements. The poses of the birds are mainly static side views, perching from branches or standing on the ground, and their sizes varied as I experimented with the scales of each one.
This project was supported by a FY2025 New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Grant for Artists for the creation of new work, sponsored by Dyckman Farmhouse Museum.
